In any application where metal meets
metal, the purpose of lubrication is to reduce friction. The
preventative nature of oil is critical to ensuring the longevity
and overall performance of an internal combustion engine or other
components such as transmissions and differentials. Under normal
conditions oil products are designed to withstand only so much heat
and pressure before they begin to lose their fundamental properties.
This process becomes accelerated by contamination entering the system
via the airways and fuel. When oil becomes contaminated, the result
is increased friction between the metal boundary surfaces resulting
in increased wear and subsequent drops in efficiency and performance.
The contaminant's in the oil add to the irregularities in the metal
surface that leads to friction related problems.
